Chile bets on green hydrogen to transform the world's energy mix

Accessibility settings

If it is green hydrogen, the world starts with Chile. This clean energy is a fundamental piece
for the global energy transition and Chile is working to be a leading player
in that scenario. Not only does it have optimal conditions for its
production, but it also has the potential to become one of the main
exporters in the world.

Clean energy for the world

Chile has exceptional natural advantages: the north has the most intense solar radiation
on the planet, while the extreme south is characterized by strong winds.
This combination makes it possible to generate renewable energy with a production capacity
up to 70 times higher than the national demand, an essential factor for the development of
H2V.

As a result, the country is projected to be the world's most competitive producer by
2030, and to consolidate its leadership with a projected production of 160 million
tons of green hydrogen by 2050.

Attractive investment destination

But there are additional factors that have made Chile a strategic point for the
development of H2V projects. Chile has built a solid and
reliable investment ecosystem, with clear rules, an open economy and a constant recognition as the
country with the best business climate in Latin America (according to the World Bank).

In 2020, the Government presented the National Green Hydrogen Strategy 2020, a roadmap that
encourages investments, infrastructure and regulations to boost the industry, a strategy
that was reinforced with the Green Hydrogen Action Plan 2023-2030, which includes 81
concrete measures to accelerate its growth.

An industry in full development

In Chile, green hydrogen is already a reality. Currently there are 88 projects
announced in different regions of the country, including Antofagasta, Magallanes, Atacama,
Coquimbo, Valparaíso, Metropolitana, O'Higgins, Biobío, Ñuble and Aysén. Five projects
are in environmental evaluation and three have already been approved. While most
are in the pre-feasibility phase, 8 initiatives are operating in the pilot phase according to the SEC.

One of the most outstanding projects is Haru Oni, of the company HIF Global, a pioneer in
the production of e-fuels, which has already exported more than 100 thousand liters to Europe and
United States. In addition, the total investment in these developments reaches 5 thousand
million dollars, consolidating Chile as a reference in the global industry of green hydrogen
.
