With a ceremony in London on May 21, Chile launched its campaign to remain on the IMO Council and reaffirmed its global maritime commitment.
On May 21, at the headquarters of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in London, Chile's campaign for re-election to the Council for the 2026-2027 term was officially launched. The event reaffirms the country's commitment to maritime safety, protection of the marine environment and international cooperation in shipping.
Let us recall that our country has been a member of this Council uninterruptedly since 2001, which underscores its active role in the formulation of global maritime policies. The current campaign seeks to further strengthen Chile' s participation in the IMO and to continue contributing to the sustainable development of international maritime transport.
In addition, the Embassy of Chile in the United Kingdom led a commemorative ceremony at Westminster Abbey for the Day of Naval Glories. Admiral Lord Thomas Cochrane, a key figure in the naval consolidation of Chile, rests in this place of profound relevance for the national maritime history.
The ceremony was presided over by the Chilean ambassador to the United Kingdom and brought together diplomatic, civilian and military authorities from different countries, in a tribute to the heroes of Iquique and the Chilean naval tradition.
