The scientific meeting will address oceanographic issues of estuarine and coastal ecosystems of the Latin American region.
Puerto Varas is getting ready to receive, for the first time in Chile, the III Latin American Latin American Congress on the Physics of Estuaries and Oceanic Coasts (LAPECO 2025), which will be held between November 24 and 28 at the Wyndham Pettra Hotel.
This outstanding international event will bring together researchers, professionals and representatives of the productive sector to address scientific advances and challenges associated with oceanographic processes in estuarine systems and coastal areas.
LAPECO 2025 is jointly organized by the I-Mar Center of Universidad de Los Lagos, Universidad de Concepción, Universidad del Bío-Bío, Universidad de Florida, Universidad Federal de Rio Grande (FURG) and Instituto Tecnológico del Salmón (Intesal). The congress includes keynote presentations, oral presentations, poster sessions and technical workshops.
Dr. Iván Pérez Santos, researcher at the I-Mar Center of the Universidad de Los Lagos, pointed out that LAPECO was inspired by the biennial conferences on Physics of Estuaries and Coastal Seas (PECS), high-level international events in which Latin American participation has historically been low.
In this context, "the LAPECO congress arises as a Latin American initiative to bring together students and researchers with the main objective of sharing advances in the dynamic knowledge of our estuaries and coastal areas, threatened by climate change and variability," he said.
The first edition of LAPECO was held in Florianopolis, Brazil in 2019, followed by a second edition in Panama City in 2023.
The Organizing Committee is already actively working on the preparations and will soon announce the opening of the call for abstracts, as well as the official formation of the Scientific Committee, in charge of preparing the final program of the congress.
