As this year's report focuses on the relationship between human development and the sustainability of our planet, we would like to share here 2 important Chilean advances and projects that show the role of our country in this regard.

Creating the future for new generations

In education, local EdTech -startups dedicated to incorporating technology in education- have registered a historic growth during the year just ended.

"Historically and worldwide, the EdTech industry has never grown as much as it has this year. Companies have managed to advance and grow in one year what we had planned for five years", explains Antonio Da Rocha, Director of Education at PleIQ, a Chilean company that develops interactive notebooks with augmented reality for preschool education with artificial intelligence and adaptive learning systems. At the beginning of 2020, it had 10,000 registered users in Latin America and to date it has already reached 100,000.

In this way, we continue to advance in the digitalization of the educational systems that will allow us to continue providing local talent for the world.

Innovating for a more sustainable agriculture

After 8 years of research with the objective of "recovering unproductive lands that can generate employment and exponentially lower the cost of production, in order to ensure food security in a context of drought and climate change", engineers Juan Carlos and José Patricio Reyes, together with agronomist Robert Vettiger, succeeded in adapting seeds of grain corn and sweet corn, wheat, oats, alfalfa and barley, and converting them into "marine" seeds, which "can be planted in deserts, where the soils are normally saline-sodic and are adapted to withstand temperatures between -2°C and 50°C. In addition, the amount of water needed is considerably less. A normal plant requires about 28 liters to sprout, while these only require half a liter".

In this way, the development of the Chilean FoodTech industry gives a new demonstration that it is possible to produce food while taking care of the environment and generating new job opportunities thanks to local creativity and talent.
