The new Puerto Montt International Passenger Terminal is the first of seven port facilities that will integrate graphic elements inspired by the country's image story, thanks to an alliance between the Fundación Imagen de Chile and the Corporación de Puertos del Cono Sur.
With the inauguration of the new International Passenger Terminal and Port City Linking Center, Puerto Montt becomes the gateway to a new way of showing Chile to the world. The space is the first of a network of seven terminals throughout the country that will incorporate a unified country image, based on the axes of sustainability, democracy and diversity, along with identity elements of the territory, such as productive activities, tourism and local cultural heritage.
María Teresa Saldías Morales, executive director of the Fundación Imagen de Chile, highlighted that this alliance allows Chile to position itself from its territories. "These initiatives allow us to show from the regions who we are, what moves us and what we have to offer the world. We want those who visit us to begin to know and experience Chile from the first step they take in our ports".
For his part, the executive secretary of the Southern Cone Ports Corporation, Eric Petri, valued the joint work that made this milestone possible. "Today we are celebrating a collaborative effort that has resulted in an international passenger terminal with an investment of more than 4.3 billion pesos, and which, thanks to the incorporation of the country image story, acquires an added value. It is a successful project and a proof that when institutions work with the same purpose, the results are visible".
The visual design that greets passengers includes giant banners with landscapes, faces, trades and cultural elements that reflect both the national identity and the local richness of the Los Lagos Region. The strategy seeks to consolidate Chile as a meaningful destination, diverse and connected to its environment.
During the 2024-2025 season, Puerto Montt received 43 cruise ships and mobilized more than 71 thousand passengers and crew, consolidating its position as the second port with the highest passenger flow in Chile.
In this context, the new infrastructure not only improves the experience of those arriving by sea, but also contributes to local development.
The President of the Republic, Gabriel Boric Font, led the inauguration ceremony and highlighted the relevance of the project. "It is not only infrastructure, it is not only public works; it is also a way to link us in a better way with the port city, because it is a terminal that improves the arrival conditions of cruise passengers coming to Puerto Montt, sheltered from the wind, the rains, and with a great view of the Tenglo channel, the bays and the volcanoes".
The work included the rehabilitation and expansion of an old gym to transform it into a passenger terminal of international standard, with a privileged view of the Tenglo channel and the bay of Puerto Montt. Among its main features are a covered walkway by the sea from the disembarkation point to the terminal; embarkation and disembarkation rooms for passengers and crew; offices for public services such as SAG, Customs and PDI, a cafeteria and an area for handicrafts and local products, all in the middle of a space conceived for the link with the community.
